KAMALA HARRIS, SPEC's First Preschool Class
Kamala graduated from Howard University in 1986 and received her law degree from Hastings
College of the Law in 1989. After a successful career in law enforcement
for more than 10 years, Kamala was elected as San Francisco's District Attorney in 2003, making
her the first African-American to hold this position in California.
SHAKIR STEWART, Former SPEC Student
Shakir Stewart graduated
from Morehouse College
in 1996. After graduation he started a music promotions company, which ultimately led him to an A&R consultant position
working for Antonio “L.A.” Reid at LaFace Records.
Several years later he was hired as Vice President of A&R for Def Jam Music Group. In October 2006, Shakir was promoted
to Senior Vice President, A&R, for Island Def Jam Music Group. He is responsible for signing such talent as Ciara, Rick
Ross and Young Jeezy. He also published such hits as Destiny Child’s “Survivor”,
Outkast’s “The Way You Move”, both Beyonce’s “Crazy in Love” and “Baby Boy”, and assembled and organized Usher's massive
hit "Yeah" on the twelve time platinum album Confessions.
DAMANI MITCHELL, DDS, SPEC Class of 1983
After obtaining his credentials
in dentistry, Damani opened a cosmetic and general dentistry practice in Oakland
(3300 Webster St., Ste 803). He has been successfully
providing comprehensive dental care to families in the Bay Area for a number of years.
Dr. ALVIN MAY, Former SPEC Student
After a successful high school
career, Alvin May was accepted into the Meyerhoff Scholarship
program at the University of Maryland Baltimore County. He graduated Magna Cum Laude and was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa
Honors Society. Following undergrad, Alvin was accepted into Harvard Medical School
and graduated in 2004. Currently, Alvin is living in Boston
as a general surgery resident and is a professional model in his spare time.
CHINAKA HODGE, SPEC Class of 1995
Chinaka graduated from New York
University (NYU) in 2006. Known for her dynamic speaking skills, Chinaka was chosen as the student speaker for her commencement
ceremony where she spoke in front of more than 40,000 people. She was also a featured performer on HBO’s Def Poetry.
Currently, Chinaka is the Associate Artistic Director for Youth Speaks, a non-profit for spoken word performance, education
and youth development programs in San Francisco. During her
spare time, she continues to write and perform.
