The mission of Shelton's Primary
Education Center (S.P.E.C.) is to serve and benefit its community by providing a safe and nurturing environment
that encourages positive growth and development in children and gives them a strong foundation, rich in their cultural heritage
and awareness of the world. We are dedicated to providing a high standard of education with the objective of training and
equipping students with those talents, which will contribute towards their growth as wholesome individuals.
We are extremely proud of our program’s success and its role in
serving as a foundation for the future leaders in the community. Over the years, we have had a hand in educating
children who are now making a difference as doctors, engineers, lawyers, teachers, business owners and much more!
In 1968 S.P.E.C.'s
legacy began with Arthur and Regina Shelton
providing child care services to a group of six students in their Berkeley home.
In 1971 their first newly renovated facility
opened, which provided services for 21 children from 2-5 years of age.
In 1974 a second site one block away
was purchased and was the beginning of the pre-kindergarten program. At this time the center was incorporated as a non-profit
organization, and a new grade level was added each year until the 6th grade. The curriculum was exciting while providing
a small nurturing environment for young children.
In 1976 a 9,000 square foot warehouse
with land parcels on both sides (our current location) was purchased from BART. During this time classes were being held at
the Finish Brotherhood Hall in Berkeley.
In 1979 S.P.E.C. opened its new renovated facility with enrollment of 110 students.
In 1981 with continued growth S.P.E.C.
had its first six grade graduation program.
In 1995 and 1999, with the passing of the founders, S.P.E.C.
renewed its commitment to the vision of children being educationally enriched and culturally nurtured. Renovations
being the most current projects, along with curriculum and staff development, mission refinement, and Board evaluation setting
the course.
In 2001 property adjacent to the current
facility was purchased for our playground development and office expansion.
In 2002 the school opened its new administration
offfice at 1808 43rd st which has 3 offices a conference area and kitchen facilities.
In 2003 completed the major redevelopment
of its playground.
In 2005 S.P.E.C. began the transition of its leadership team. Mrs. Saniyyah Smith
was appointed as the new Business Director for the school.
In 2006
Mrs. Lisa Hopkins, S.P.E.C. teacher of ten years,
was appointed as the new School-Age Program Director. Several renovations to the school were also made in 2006, which included
remodeling the main office, painting the facility inside and out, and brand new computer equipment for the school-age computer
lab.
