SCHOOL CURRICULUM
Shelton's Primary Education Center's (S.P.E.C.)
program fosters joy in discovery and learning in a nurturing envrionment that encourages each student to accept responsibility.
Each student is understood as a learner and as a social person with a blend of strengths, needs, learning styles, interests
and talents.Using the California Curriculum Framework for Elementary Students as a benchmark, the
S.P.E.C. cirriculum is carefully coordinated to instill a strong foundation in the basic skills and to develop
high levels of analytical and critical thinking through age-appropriate activities and high expectations. Children learn in contained classrooms and enjoy the benefits of a fine
library, audio-visual and computer technology. We also encourage children to view learning as an integral part of their
environment and life. In addition, various extra-curricular activities are offered
after school.

MATH
All students participate in a well-paced math program. They receive instruction in the basic skills of arithmetic including addition, subtraction,
division and multiplication. Students are also introduced to advanced concepts
such as weights and measures, fractions and geometry. The program presents mathematics as a way to explore and gain
control over situations in the real world. Emphasis is placed on logic and problem
solving using manipulatives and real-life situations.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Students participate in a physical education program which concentrates
on health, fitness and gross motor coordination. The program involves vigorous
movement of the major parts of the body and includes jumping, balancing, hand and eye coordination. Emphasis is placed on individual as well as team development.
S.P.E.C. provides many opportunities for children to discover and develop their creative talents
in some form of artistic, musical or dramatic expression. The
students experiment with form, color, design, and various media in art classes. Their artwork is on constant display in the
halls. The students enjoy music classes, with singing, dancing,
composition, rhythm instruments, listening, and may other activities. They perform in productions created from these
special classes as well as from the regular classroom curriculum.

READING/LANGUAGE ART
The goal of the language
arts program is to sustain an atmosphere in which reading, writing and speaking are perceived as joyful and worthwhile experiences.
By using a specialized phonics-based reading program, emphasizing the development of strong word-attach skills, and providing
texts rich with positive images, S.P.E.C. has been successful
in developing independent readers by the age of six.The ultimate goal is to develop skillful life-long readers.
SCIENCE
Basic principals of earth, life and physical sciences
are introduced in kindergarden. These concepts are expanded upon as the student progresses from first through fifth grades. The school is equipped with basic instrumentation such as microscopes, magnifying
glasses, etc. The students are instructed in health science in collaboration
with the physical education curriculum. Research, note-taking, experimentation,
critical thinking and reporting are greatly emphasized.
SOCIAL STUDIES, GEOGRAPHY, HISTORY & CURRENT EVENTS
The program introduces
various concepts in social sciences and students are encouraged to participate in discussions relating to attitudes toward
self, family, community, culture and history. Geography is also taught as part of the social studies program to
aid in the identification of various land formations, nations, climates and natural resources, and to identify the influence
of these factors on the history and development of various cultures.
French is offered as the foreign language for grades kindergarden
through fifth. The beginning program emphasizes the spoken language; students are taught basic vocabulary relating to
their daily activities. The advanced grades receive instruction in reading and
writing of the language.
